Event Preview: CCHS Orchestra Fall Concert

Viola player Jackson Montgomery, a senior, was a part of the festival, and will be performing in the upcoming Orchestra Fall Concert on Oct. 7. “(The concerts prepare) us to play more complicated pieces, because every concert we challenge ourselves to play a piece that's harder than our (current) skill level,” Montgomery said. “I think we have a good level of challenge in our music (for this concert) to prepare us for harder music (later) this year.” Photo by Miriam Silk

The Clarke Central High School Orchestra will take to the stage in the E.B. Mell Auditorium on Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. to perform its annual Fall Concert, which will be open to the public with no admission fee.
The CCHS Orchestra has prepared nine pieces for the performance, which will be played in Concert, Philharmonic and Symphony groups and includes performances from five student soloists. The chosen pieces feature traditional Hispanic songs, including “Baile de Lila” and “Bailes para Orquesta,” alongside standard high school Orchestra songs.
“I hope that all of our fine arts events are attended by the community, not just families who have children at CCHS, but people outside that might be interested in seeing what's going on and hearing the beautiful performances,” Fine arts department co-chair and Tri-M Music Honor Society adviser Dr. Eunice Kang, who will be directing the concert, said.
In comparison to previous years, this concert gives the Symphony viola section a new chance to carry the main musical lines of the songs, otherwise known as carrying the melody.
“(The viola players) get a lot of melodies in the songs we're playing, which is nice because sometimes (the) viola (section) is under-represented,” CCHS viola player Jackson Montgomery, a senior, said. “Usually the melodies (are) given to violins (or) cellos, so it's nice to have the melody for once.”
While the concert will be free to the general public, GoFan and cash donations are accepted at the door as a way to support the orchestra program in preparation for future performances, such as their Winter and Spring Concerts, Pre-Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE) Concert, and LGPE.
“Hopefully, we can share (our music) with the community enough (so) they recognize the orchestra to give us more opportunities,” Montgomery said. “(With more support), we can get more supplies. It's always nice to have resources like that, and getting recognition would really help.”
