Interacting with “Interactions”

The 2013 edition of the iliad, “Interactions,” serves as a time capsule for the culture of the CCHS community 13 years ago.

The 37th volume of the iliad Literary-Art Magazine, “Interactions,” was released in 2013. “Interactions” explores the different stages of human connections and relationships through five subsections: “Correspondence,” “Harmony,” “Dependence,” “Conflict” and “Resolution,” spanning across 80 pages.

The magazine features eye-catching photography for its front and back covers, inside cover and the subsection dividers throughout. The varying shades of hands on the cover image, in contrast to the blue background, creates a striking design, and the choice to include photography for the subsection art effectively encapsulates the human aspect of the magazine’s theme.

In writing pieces throughout the magazine, such as “Discipline,” “Mother’s Day,” “Cloudy Day” and “Not Applicable,” Clarke Central High School students and faculty write about how our school population at that time interacted with their friends, family and the world around them. Despite being printed in black and white, visual pieces such as “Les Etoiles,” “Shattered” and “Wisdom” that accompany these writing pieces provide both literal and abstract representations of the feelings people experience in relationships.

One thing that sets this magazine apart from other iliads is the repeated use of full-spread artwork.  “Andorra,” “Dreamers,” “Dazed” and “Patriotism.” take up an entire spread, sometimes with a poem layered over the visual, providing a lot of space to present artwork and creating an immersive reading experience.

All in all, “Interactions” is an enjoyable and thought-provoking read that represents how the CCHS creative community interacted with each other and the world around them in the 2012-13 school year.
